UCD teams that have been in existence for 10 or more years all had some sort of defined team mission. The majority of these missions fell into the well-defined category. It was interesting to see every team of this age reported some tangible team mission.

Here are some examples of the types of mission statements that these respondents reported:

We work with developers (about 70-80) who produce the business software that is used internally in our company. We are responsible for mocking up designs, running usability tests, analyzing the results and suggesting improvements. We are also responsible for writing online help and messages for the final product. When we design interfaces, our goal is to have the interface easy enough to understand and use that users can figure it our for themselves. As much as possible, we try to fit the interface to the users' tasks and needs. Regulations and reporting requirements sometimes get in the way of our goals.
To understand the customer experience of Broadband Living, and to translate that into new and better products and services for our customers.
Our team is composed of technical writers, usability engineers, ethnographers, interaction designers, industrial designers, and marketing research. The usability engineers and ethnographers in our group work collaboratively with designers, market research, and members of the product teams throughout the product development cycle. We conduct user research to gather data that influences all phases of product design.

Well Defined Team	These mission statements enumerate roles and responsibilities, as well as how the UCD team fits into the corporate structure and strategy.
Definition In Progress	These mission statements mainly focus on activities that the team performs or what the members specialize in.
No Clear Definition	These are mission statements which state very little about what the goals of the team are, and might only list the titles of the team members.
